Real-Time Heart Rate
The heart rate function in basic smartwatches commonly employs photoplethysmography (PPG) technology. A green LED light on the back of the watch emits light. Hemoglobin exhibits significant absorption of green light. During cardiac contraction, blood vessels fill with blood, increasing green light absorption and reducing reflected light. During cardiac relaxation, blood vessels constrict, enhancing reflected light. The photodetector captures these light intensity changes and converts them into electrical signals. An internal chip algorithm then calculates the heart rate. This enables 24/7 continuous monitoring. Paired with an accelerometer, it minimizes interference from wrist movement during exercise.
Blood Oxygen
Blood oxygen monitoring extends the application of PPG technology. The basic smartwatch switches between red and infrared light as detection sources. Oxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more red light and less infrared light, while deoxygenated hemoglobin exhibits the opposite behavior. The sensor calculates blood oxygen saturation by comparing the intensity difference between emitted and received light, processed through an algorithm.
Body Temperature
The base model smartwatch primarily employs NTC contact-based temperature measurement technology. An NTC thermistor is secured to the watch’s bottom metal plate via thermal silicone gel. When worn, the metal plate maintains close contact with the skin. After reaching thermal equilibrium, the thermistor absorbs skin heat through the metal plate and converts it into body temperature data via algorithmic processing.
