Introduction

WELL has been engaged in smartwatch OEM and ODM services for more than 6 years, and we have made some achievements in vertical markets with our high precision smartwatches, and consumers are more recognized for the quality, cost and service of our smartwatches. Since 2018, we have been operating in two markets, with strengths in new product design, R&D engineering for ODM projects, production line supply chain management and quality assurance.

Please follow the ultimate guide to Smart Watch OEM & ODM

1. Clarify the structure and specifications of the smartwatch

In the present day, smartwatches are one of the popular consumer electronics products, and understanding their main components and functions is not a difficult task. Especially for those who are using smartwatches, this experience of using them will be a great help to better understand their construction and functions.

1.1 Display:
  • Size:

0.96 inches and 1.14 inches are the more common sizes in smart bracelets or small screen smartwatch models.1.09 inches, 1.28 inches, 1.3 inches, 1.4 inches, are the mainstream sizes of the round and square.2018 onwards, the large screen sizes began to be popular, like 1.54 inches, 1.69 inches, and even 2.88 inches, this larger screen size is gradually popular. size screens gradually became popular.

  • Material:

The materials of the display screen are IPS, TFT, LCD, OLED and so on. The choice of raw materials depends on the product structure and cost. Smartwatch suppliers tend to select materials with stable quality and lower cost to make the finished products more competitive in the market.

  • Resolution:

240*240dpi is a common resolution, in addition, there are 240*320 or 320*320dpi resolution, there are also 80*160dpi lower resolution, and the choice of resolution also depends on the size of the display.

  • Touch type:

There are two types of touch: full touch and single touch. Most of our smartwatches use full touch, and users get a better experience with full touch. However, there are also some products that retain single-touch, and for most users, this design also performs well.

  • Cost:

Since last year, the cost of smartwatch screens has risen dramatically, with some even reaching twice the previous cost. Generally speaking, the cost of large-size screens will be higher than that of small-size screens, however, some screens that are less frequently used and smaller in size may also cost more than large-size screens. Comparatively speaking, the most common size of the screen, the price will be lower.

1.2 CPU:

CPU is one of the key elements in the cost and quality of smartwatches, as it plays a decisive role in the quality of hardware, software, and apps. In overseas markets, we use Nordic chips, this is because we focus on mid to high end as well as high quality vertical markets. These markets require high-precision performance to guarantee remote monitoring results.

In the Chinese market, Nordic’s NRF52840 and NRF52832, MTK’s MTK2503A – ARM7 and MTK2502D, and Realtek’s 8762CW + BK3266, 8762C, RTL8762CK, RTK8762C + VC31 are among the top products.

It should be noted, however, that even with the same CPU, the quality level can vary due to other algorithmic differences between vendors. If you want to provide highly accurate data such as heart rate or SPO2, then you need to choose a high quality CPU solution.

1.3 Battery:
  • Capacity:For small-sized smartwatches or smart bracelets, the battery capacity is mostly 90mah, but there are also cases of 200mah, 300mah, and even up to 650mah.
  • Working time:Generally speaking, the larger the battery capacity, the longer it can be used after charging, but it also depends on the specific CPU solution. The operating time of a smartwatch varies between 1 and 30 days, depending on the solution and the number of sensors in operation. Like GPS, the Wifi function consumes a lot of power.
  • Standby time:Most smartwatches have a standby time of 20 – 50 days.
  • Certification:MSDS must be provided upon shipment.
1.4 Watch Case Material:
  • CNC:Polished CNC cases are ideal for smartwatches and corrosion-resistant touch applications. It has a tough look that is more suited to the needs of business people. This type of case is usually used to manufacture for luxury watch brands.
  • Aluminum alloy:The most common material used in mid-range smartwatches, aluminum is lightweight and elegant, and works well with any type of strap, such as silicone or leather.
  • Plastic:Some customers prefer plastic cases, although some also prefer alloy cases. Plastic cases are the lightest in weight, durable and less costly than the other two case materials.
1.5 Storage/RAM:

In terms of storage and memory, there are storage sizes of 128MB, 160MB, 154MB and 4GB of RAM respectively.

1.6 Watch Strap:
  • Material:most smartwatch bands are made of standard materials such as TPU or silicone, of course, there are also customized bands made of leather, mesh, steel and so on.
  • Width:The width of the watchband is mainly 18mm, 20mm and 22mm.
1.7 Charing Way:
  • Magnetic charging:it has two pins, and charging is realized by connecting with the case back.
  • Wireless charging:just place the watch on the wireless charger, similar to the way of charging a smartphone.
  • USB charging:Smart bracelets are mostly charged by USB.

Before you embark on a smartwatch project, taking a little time to learn more about the features and structure of a smartwatch will help you make a better choice.

2. Smart Watch OEM & ODM Defenition and Process

2.1 Smart Watch ODM

Most smartwatch factories have all-round new product customization capability, from product design, mold opening, function setting to packaging design, all of which can be customized according to customer’s requirements. In a nutshell, the customer gives the ODM smartwatch factory a product idea, the factory develops a mold based on the customer’s functional requirements, and sells it globally under the customer’s brand.

Generally speaking, the customer gives the appearance and functional requirements of the smartwatch. The factory can plan the internal PCBA according to your design, and you can also choose the CPU solution and sensors. You own the product, and the factory only helps you to realize the product concept.

As a result, the product is primarily manufactured to your specifications. You own the ID and ownership of the product and are able to register patents for appearance, functionality, etc.

Depending on your functional requirements and the main raw materials needed, you can tightly control the cost of your ODM smartwatch. However, this requires you to have a large demand for your product, so your upfront market research is extremely important. In the long run, the ODM business model is a lucrative one.

ODM Smart Watch Customization Process:

Step 1: Define the features and functions of the smartwatch.

Step 2:If all the functions can be reached, the customer should provide drawings or design drawings of the smartwatch.

Step 3:Based on the above two steps, confirm the main raw materials such as CPU, sensor, etc. This will determine the cost and quality of the smartwatch. This will determine the cost and quality of the smartwatch.

Step 4:Determine the ODM cost, including mold cost, engineering cost, and product unit price. And, have a preliminary idea of the quantity of the first order. Because this is a new program, there is a minimum order quantity (MOQ), which varies from factory to factory, but the first bulk order quantity should be 10,000 – 20,000 pieces.

Step 5:Sign the ODM smartwatch project agreement, which covers timelines, samples, bulk order timing, patent issues, etc.

Step 6:The customer pays the ODM fee, and the smartwatch supplier then begins the customization work per the agreement.

Step 7:Samples are tested and approved after molds are made.

Step 8:Bulk order begins.

2.2. Smart Watch OEM

When importers or brand owners are ready to start a smartwatch sales business, they usually expect OEM customization to make the product more compatible with their own brand’s sales strategy.

In-depth customization can make products unique and competitive, such as customizing exclusive logos, user interfaces, languages, and even providing regular smartwatch software updates to enhance the user experience.

Imagine your smartwatch with :

  • Your logo and branding on startup
  • Special icons on the watch firmware
  • An exclusive custom-themed box.

The benefit of OEM is that you save time and investment and can quickly capture the market with a new and unique product because you don’t have to research and design the product yourself. Instead, you can choose from a selection of your factory’s existing products for OEM production, creating a range of products under your brand.

However, you may have also noticed the pitfalls of OEM smartwatch customization. One of the most critical is that your products may differ very little from those of competitors using the same business model, as the factory may sell the products to other competitors. We have supported OEM customization for wholesalers.

OEM Smart Watch Customization Process:

Step 1: Select some samples from the factory’s existing products for testing.

Step 2: Identify one or more stock keeping units (SKU) for your OEM smartwatch.

Step 3: Start working on the OEM smartwatch project, customization work like logo, user interface or packaging.

Step 4: Different OEM customizations correspond to different minimum order quantities (MOQ).

2.3 ODM and OEM Method (OEM and OEM Hybrid Customization)

This is an increasingly popular way of customizing smartwatches. After more than a decade of development, smartwatches have remained strikingly similar in terms of appearance, with few significant differences between them.

Professional users and brands, in particular, are more focused on functionality and the accuracy of monitoring data. Smartwatches are gradually becoming symbols and assistants for health monitoring, while also playing a decorative role.

Therefore, more and more customers usually do not change the hardware, but add some functions according to their own needs or application scenarios, such as fall detection, SOS emergency call, ECG and other functions.

This requires a redesign of the PCBA based on the existing models in the factory’s product line. The APP and firmware are also customized.

It is a comprehensive and more optimal customization solution that saves time and investment.

Benefits: Costs are lower than ODM because there is no need to re-mold the case. And you can customize the case color and unique band to match your eye-catching smartwatch.

Cons: Adding new features to existing hardware requires frequent testing and communication to ensure requirements are met. You’ll need to coordinate more with the manufacturer to make sure it works.

OEM – ODM is now offering more of this option, with more customized features for wholesalers with larger orders.

It is important that you get in touch with your supplier during your customization project. I firmly believe that if you find a reliable supplier, your customization project will go very smoothly. They have been in this situation many times and are always ready to answer your questions.

OEM – ODM smartwatch customization process:

Step 1: Select some samples for testing from the factory’s existing products

Step 2: Determine a look and feel and start ODM customization

Step 3: Clarify what you want to achieve or what you want to change in the main raw materials.

Step 4: Can the factory confirm that the existing hardware can be used to add the raw materials required by the customer?

Step 5: If so, start calculating the cost of the ODM customization versus the cost of the product.

Step 6: Once the customer approves the cost, move forward!

Step 7: Test samples after fixing all bugs

Step 8: Initiate volume orders
